Scars from Abdominoplasty in Miami

A tummy tuck can produce a stronger abdominal wall, firmer skin and a more attractive mid-body contour. Like all surgical procedures, however, a tummy tuck will leave some abdominal scaring.

A full abdominoplasty requires two incision points. The first such point runs from hip to hip over the lower pubic region and the other circles the belly button. While it is not possible to perform abdominoplasty without leaving these faint scars, excessive scarring in either location is rare.

The degree of scarring that may result from your tummy tuck depends partly on the procedural specifics involved in your unique surgery, as well as the tone of your skin. However, several unpredictable factors will also play a role in determining the visibility of your scars, including your body's ability to heal itself and your genetic heritage.

Scars will start out red and raised before fading and flattening over time. It is not unusual for scars to appear to worsen during the first several months into recovery before they show improvement. Scars typically continue to improve for a year or two.

If you have preexisting abdominal scars, we will evaluate them during your consultation to see if they will affect your tummy tuck. If your surgeon believes that a prior abdominal scar would lead to unusually prominent scars after undergoing tummy tuck, you may be advised against undergoing the procedure. On the other hand, very prominent abdominal scars, such as those left by a caesarian delivery or another surgery, can often be improved or eliminated during a tummy tuck. Only an expert examination of your current scars can determine if you are a good candidate for tummy tuck.

We provide our patients special creams and ointments to compliment the body's own natural healing processes. Some cases will ultimately require more serious treatment, such as a corrective surgery.

Smoking cigarettes just before or after your procedure can increase the Potential Risks & Complications associated with a tummy tuck, including significant scarring. Setting aside a smoking habit, even temporarily, is an important way you can reduce the seriousness of your scars.

Tummy tuck scars will never become totally invisible. For most of our patients, though, these scars will fade dramatically and will not show under most clothing, including swimwear.
