How is a mini tummy tuck performed?

Two kinds of abdominoplasty can be performed: a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. For information about the full tummy tuck, please see our About Tummy Tuck page.

During a mini tummy tuck, a short incision is made just above the pubic region. Sutures are used to tighten muscles of the lower abdomen. Great care is taken to minimize the visibility of this scar. Excess folds of skin between the incision line and the navel are removed to create a slimmer, more attractively contoured lower abdomen.

How do I prepare for my mini tummy tuck?

During your initial consultation with us, our surgeon will request your complete medical history, including current medications, known allergies and all prior surgeries. You will also be given a blood test and a thorough physical examination. Patients over forty years of age will undergo an electrocardiogram.

During your initial consultation, your surgeon will talk to you about each preoperative step that must be taken prior to undergoing your mini tummy tuck. For more information, please read our page Preparing for Your Mini Tummy Tuck.

Can my mini tummy tuck be combined with another procedure?

Yes, it can. A mini tummy tuck is often performed in tandem with a second procedure. One very popular complementary procedure is liposuction, though other pairings can be appropriate. Our surgeon will make an assessment of your unique cosmetic goals and thoroughly explain every option that is appropriate and safe for you.

When can I return home?

Although a mini tummy tuck can occasionally involve a short hospital stay, most of our patients can go home just a few hours after undergoing mini tummy tuck.

Someone will then need to drive you home following your stay and provide care for you during the 24 to 48 hours that follow your return home.

All South Florida Center mini tummy tuck patients must schedule follow-up appointments for these post-operative timelines:

  • 1 day
  • 1 week
  • 1 month
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 1 year

How long before I can resume my normal activities?

While each individual will heal according to their body’s own unique timeline, most of our mini tummy patients will resume normal activities in within one week. How quickly you return to work will depend partly on the activities you perform at your job, but a return one or two weeks after the procedure is common. Light exercise will help your body’s healing process, but vigorous exercise must be avoided for about two weeks.
